Petrit Ishmi

Petrit Ishmi (Nurishmi) (born 1951, in Tirana ) is an Albanian typographer (typewriter), which served at the military typography during the communist regime. He is the founder and the leader of the Committee for the Protection of People's Rights of Albania (Albanian: KMDPSH, Komiteti për Mbrojtjen e të Drejtave të Popullit Shqiptar) from December 1979 until March 1989 which led to his arrest as he distributed the anti-Communist leaflets in Shkoder city and continued with the lost of his unborn child.

During his arrest, at his place were found 924 leaflets calling people for a mass demonstration against the communist regime (People's Republic of Albania). After 7 month of interrogation and violence (afersisht 6 muaj hetusi plus 1 muaj ne qeli), the presiding judge Femi Avdiu sentenced him with 20 years imprisonment and 5 years internal exile. Amnesty International report 1991 (errata) did provide a brief information about him.

Ironically, the judge Femi Avdiu was elected later on during the democracy as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Albania.

Petrit is also known as the chairman of the Democratic Ideal Party of Albania (Albanian: Partia Ideali Demokratik Shqiptare) which was registered on March 8, 1996.

Family and personal life.


Petrit's father was Kasem Ishmi (and from his mother's side Kokonozi) a bakery and dairy business owner and a the son of Abdyl Latif Ishmi (Nurishmi) a tailor owner. Kasem died when Petrit was only 2 years old.


Mahmudie Ishmi by marriage (from her father's side Caslli and her mother's side Huta) was Petrit's mother, born in 1919, a kindergarten teacher and the daughter of Mehmet Caslli, which was for a period the General Director of Taxation in Albania (Albanian: KryeTaksidari i pergjithshem i Shqiperise) during the Zog Monarchy.

Petrit married Bujare Papoj in 1976, an electric engineer, and had a daughter.

He's also related to Aqif Pasha Elbasani.
