Early years
[edit]Born in Taiwan, Luly was encouraged by a family of architects, artists and engineers, who taught her to appreciate the fundamentals of timeless and elegant design. At the early age of six, Luly began to show signs of her love for art and fashion. By the time she attended the University of Washington and received a BA in Graphic Design, Luly had acquired the fundamentals that allowed her to apply principles of form and function. She then built a career in branding, graphic design and architecture prior to launching her eponymous label. In 1999, Luly created her signature Monarch Butterfly dress for a fashion show benefitting the Art with Heart Foundation. The design of The Luly Yang Monarch Gown was instantly iconic and was the catalyst for Luly’s rediscovery of her love for fashion. She immediately took the leap to redirect her artistic medium to fashion design and opened her couture studio.
