The Phoenix News (stylized as THE PHOENIX NEWS in their logo) is a bi-weekly student-run newspaper at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus based in Kelowna, British Columbia[1]. It was established in 1989 at the former Okanagan College before the eventual transition of the North Okanagan University College campus to UBC-O in 2006[2] and despite being located and predominantly published at UBC-O), it claims that it “...maintains editorial independence from the institution and the student governments.”[3]

History[edit]

The Phoenix has been the student newspaper of UBC Okanagan[4] since 1989. It was created following the success of other newspaper outlets such as Goliard, which was the newspaper when the institution was named the Okanagan College and later Okanagan University College[5]. Since its founding, The Phoenix has maintained editorial independence from its academic institution and encourages students to submit material for review and publication. The Phoenix has a main office located in the University Centre building within the UBC Okanagan campus and accepts article submission, editor letters, comments/concerns etc.

Outlets[edit]

Paper Newsletter[edit]

Phoenix News releases a newsletter and associated paper weekly on Saturdays, with the exception of holiday seasons and over the exam period. Instead, they are released periodically on Fridays before special events, such as the beginning of finals season or before widely celebrated holidays[6].

Website[edit]

Phoenix News has an active website which encourages readers to offer stories, submissions, interests, anecdotes, poems and much more that could be fashioned into articles, features or news stories. This website is also used alongside active campaigning at events such as the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) club fair to raise awareness about the organization. This is done in the effort of bringing news-worthy stories into their light, brought by students and consumers of their products as well as to advertise job openings to their growing team of writers, editors, photographers, videographers, campaigners, publishers and more[1].
