- former Continental Congressman John Vining of Dover elected a member of the United States House of Representatives beating Rhoads Shankland.
- Voters and electors George Mitchell, John Baning, and Gunning Bedford Jr. elect George Washington as the first President of the United States.

- John Vining of Dover is sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives.
- Richard Bassett and George Read are sworn in as the first two United States senators from Delaware.^[1]
March 29th
- President Thomas Collins dies in office.
- Jehu Davis is sworn as the 9th president succeeding Thomas Collins (now governor).^[2]

June 2nd – Joshua Clayton is sworn in as the 10th and last president succeeding Jehu Davis (now to be governor in 1793).^[3]

September 24th – The United States District Court for the District of Delaware is established by the Judiciary Act of 1789 with George Washington nominated Gunning Bedford Jr. as the first judge.^[4]
