Career
[edit]Justine Limpus Parish had worked in Los Angeles for many years and in San Francisco. Parish mainly worked in the fashion industry as a designer, educator, illustrator, and even a publisher. In 2012 Parish had her first published e-book series called "Drawing Fashion" that contained 3 series. Parish had a BFA in Painting & Drawing and did many different kinds of jobs.
"Parish was a dept store newspaper art Director, creator and first chair of the Fashion Dept at the Academy of Art University in SF. Later on she started her own clothing business in the early 1990s. Then she started to do NY trade shows until 2001. Most of her clothes would get sold through galleries and boutiques. When 9/11 had ended she also worked in luxury design for a few years. She later became a teacher at PCC, Mt SAC, Fullerton College, Otis Fashion and at ArtCenter College of Design teaching Wearables & Soft Goods Design Entertainment Design. Not only was she able to teach, but she was also able to create a sewing Lab 10 years ago and now it is open to all majors [1]. She also ran classes/ workshops at the Disney studios, as she would get bored easily and would always had something new to work on." (Personal interview with Parish).
Artwork
[edit]Parish did a lot of fashion work such as:
- Peacock theme design
One of Parish favorite design to do, as she has " always like the Art Nouveau designs with peacock motifs" (Justine Limpus Parish). She also enjoys the colors and the overall design as it speaks to her.[2]
- Art to wear bridal
This piece that took her a long time to create as she wanted this piece to be used for a runway. When she's does a big certain pieces she only does one a years because "one piece can take her up to 6 months coming up with the design and then the rest of the months creating it" [3].
- Tide pool dream coat (2017)
This design had many different kind of colors and had soft materials. The materials that where used are "silk, polyester organza, tulle, yarn, metallic thread, collaged fabric, hand pleated shibori, metallic paint"[4]. This look was inspired by the "women warriors in a beautifully molded corset of stainless steel and leather" [4]. (The necklace is not Parish's).
- Fashionista (2006)
Exhibition garments that was in the bernina fashion show. This garment was made with "modern materials of the 21st century" [5]. It was made out of sheer "stretch undergarment and the rest of the materials where like a ballroom dance kind of dress" [6]. A petticoat was also added that went above the knees and the colors of this dress where a "multi-colored panels of iridescent sage and lavender chiffon" [7] that was attached at the waist.
- Signature collection of shibori was sold nationally as well
Parish had her own collections of shibori. Shibori is a "Japanese manual resist dyeing technique used on textiles to creates patterns that spread unevenly across the fabric"[8]. Shibori is also used traditionally in the Japanese culture, as it was used with a "white cloth that was folded, compressed, or twisted and then tied before being dipped into natural indigo dyes" [9]. The main reason why Japanese would used this kind of material is because they wanted to appreciate the beauty of fashion and how it was unique from each material no matter what because of how the patterns would spread uneven.
