Dtella

Dtella is a free and open-source, peer-to-peer file-sharing client which is used to connect to a which is used to connect to a distributed, decentralized DC++ Direct Connect network. Dtella allows the creation of a file-sharing intra-net with decentralized communication between clients. This allows clients on the same network to share files without an internet connection allowing clients to avoid internet bandwidth limitations.

Dtella is pronounced "dee-tell-uh"^[1] and the name originates from the rough contraction of "DC++ GNUtella", a P2P system which shares a similar network structure to Dtella (although Dtella does not derive from it)^[2]

History

Dtella originated at Purdue and grew out of the existing, no longer maintained DCGate Project, a DC network linked via IRC directory nodes. DCGate, and later Dtella, arose from the need to share files on a network without being limited by Purdue's 5GB daily bandwidth limit for residents of its residence halls^{[citation needed]}. Dtella featured several improvements over DCGate. While DCGate featured main IRC directory nodes, Dtella is decentralized, making it harder to shut down. DCgate translated between DC and IRC protocols, while Dtella forms a P2P mesh network allowing it to not rely on IRC or any other central node. This additionally made it more adaptable to other universities and faster to spread as no central node needed to be setup and maintained.Bandwidth caps for large networked entities such as university residence halls are common practice, attributing to Dtella's spread and growth across multiple universities.
