The United Nations operates on a principle of consensus

The Wikipedia policy of consensus is one that is followed by the nations of the world and is the policy that is used in Wikipedia in determining the content of articles. It has many of the aspects of the peer review system, but with the notable exceptions that there is no chairman and that members are self-appointed. The result is a system that usually works well, but which has few correction mechanisms when there are widely divergent opinions on matters.
