Background

Sustainable Urbanism Sustainable Urbanism – Urban Design with Nature by Doug Farr

Definition: Sustainable Urbanism is walkable and transit-served urbanism integrated with high-performance buildings and high-performance infrastructure. Compactness (density) and biophilia (human access to nature) are core values of sustainable urbanism.

New Urbanist and board member of CNU, Doug Farr has taken a step further and coined Sustainable Urbanism, which combines New Urbanism and LEED-ND to create walkable, transit-served urbanism with high performance buildings and infrastructure. (from ‘New Urbanism’ Wikipedia page)

Defining Elements • New Urbanism o Background information on New Urbanism • Compare and Contrast: Sustainable Urbanism versus New Urbanism o Why is Sustainable Urbanism different than New Urbanism • High-performance buildings o Definition and examples of high-performance commercial and residential buildings • High-performance infrastructure o Definition and examples of sustainable infrastructures, such as energy and water efficient systems

Examples -We are going to search for three to five case studies regarding sustainable urbanism, examples from both built and unbuilt regions and cities.

Organizations -We are going to include the organizations linked to the idea of sustainable urbanism • Farr Associates o a firm focused on sustainable design in architecture and urban design • U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) Criticisms -Research pending on specific criticisms of Sustainable Urbanism
