John-Michael “Mawd Derby” Popovici[edit]

Personal[edit]

Born May 29th 1991 in Hollywood, FL to Diane Jekic Popovici and Ioan Mihail Popovici. He has no living siblings and one aborted potential older sister. Mawd enjoys being angry, long walks, thoughtful conversations, smoking tobacco products, and video games. He holds an intense aversion to television, superficiality, turbo-feminists, overzealous activists, baseless opinionated criticism, supporters of the existing American education system, and various forms of stereotype reinforcement.

Early Life and Primary Education[edit]

His father removed him from his mother’s care early in his life. Mawd was raised in a small tool-shed in the Appalachian Mountains on the western fringe of North Carolina, nearest to the town of Murphy. As an immigrant from a then Communist Romania, his father assumed all education was standardized and sent Mawd to Hiwassee Dam School, local K-12 public school 14 miles from their property while he focused on single-handedly erecting his dream home. It became evident to his father through simple questioning and the lack of academic work that there was a discrepancy between Mawd's academic potential and work assigned to him. Mawd's father pressured his son and pushed him academically, skipping two grades. This created a 3-year age gap, inhibiting any attempts at a social life.

Secondary Education[edit]

NCSSM[edit]

Mawd's father sought greater academic opportunity for his son in 2005 by enrolling him in the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, NC as a junior, still under the average age of incoming juniors. Mawd was introduced to a poor environment with no reprieve and constant conflict. He injured his roommate due to growing belligerence and needless antagonism between them on account of his roommate’s emerging homosexuality. Mawd was reprimanded for disciplinary action after breaking both his roommate's nose and ankle, bringing an abrupt end to his roommate’s varsity soccer career. Mawd was then referred to a social worker while still enrolled in NCSSM to condition him to be more sensitive and considerate of diversity.

Asheville School[edit]

In 2006 his father removed him from the public institution NCSSM, and enrolled him in a private school as a sophomore, reversing the two years he had skipped. The Asheville School of Asheville, NC was a rich structured environment that Mawd participated in thoroughly. He engaged in the mountaineering program with mountain biking and mountain climbing. Mawd excelled at long distance running and swimming on the Varsity Cross Country Team and the Varsity Swimming Team in the 500, 200, and 100 freestyle events. He wrestled in the 170 weight division in the Varsity Wrestling Team, played long-pole defense for the JV Lacrosse Team, and as a senior, practiced with the football team during their preseason before returning to the Varsity Cross Country Team. Outside athletics, Mawd was an above-average academic student, a member of the Hoste Society, a writer for the school newspaper, in addition to publishing his own personal tri-weekly periodical. He played as an actor in the Cinema Club eventually succeeding its president, and single-handedly operated the Technician Booth during convocations, speeches, and performances in the school’s theater.

Post-Secondary Education[edit]

UNC[edit]

He is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, having finished prerequisites for his English Major and attempting to finish his Creative Writing Minor. He aspires to join an MFA program and publish a novel he was working on prior to enrollment in Chapel Hill, though admits to having to rewrite most of the existing 168 pages. He described it largely as a heavily industrial themed space western bordering on Steampunk.

Part-Time Employment[edit]

A previous employee of the Carolina Union Production Services’ Tech Staff prior to resigning and transitioning to a new part-time job with App-Ark Consultant Group, as an online consultant and writing editor for Chinese high school students seeking post-secondary education in America.
