Young Sun Han
[edit]Young Sun Han is a 41 year old, Korean-American artist from Evanston, IL. He produces exaggerated art pieces that tell stories. One of the most common themes that appear in his art are pieces that highlight his family’s history. Another theme that is common with his work is social justice. He explores things such as sexuality, race and current events in his artwork.
Early Life
[edit]Not much is known about Han’s early life. He attended Goldsmiths college, which is known to be a common start for young british artists. He also graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Work and accomplishments

Han has a lot of accomplishments. According to the Print Center, “ “Han is the recipient of the Brovero Photography Prize, Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Fellowship and Fred Endsley Memorial Fellowship. He recently completed residencies at the Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art, Berlin, Germany and Materia Abierta, Mexico City.”[1] Han was also famously known for his “24 hour hug” that he has only performed twice. The piece was a performance where Han recruited a stranger and hugged him for 24 hours straight. With all of his inspiring pieces, Han has been included in many exhibitions and held many high positions. He was co-director and curator at City Art Rooms Project Trust. Was Production advisor for The Nasty Women Exhibition and Special projects coordinator at David Zwirner. He has exhibited at Elijah Wheat Showroom, Brooklyn; Jean Albano Gallery and Zolla/Lieberman. He was also included in a show called “The Last City”. Han has also taught at The State University of New Jersey.
Current Life
[edit]Young Sun Han has accomplished so much throughout his career. He is a permanent resident of New Zealand, but is based in Brooklyn, NY. Han currently teaches at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. In 2020, Han appeared as the leading role in a feature film called “The Last City” which premered at the Berlinale. His recent residencies include: 2019: Materia Abierta, Mexico City and 2018: the Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art, Berlin. Han still continues created art and utilizes everyday items to help him create his pieces. Some recent pieces include “Limbo Exchange- Currency and Keys” and “Absolutely Nothing! (a lip sync for our lives).”[2]
