After the Allied forces along with NICA entered and occupied Jakarta in 1946, Jakarta that were once the headquarter of the Indonesian government was considered unsuitable for a government center due to the unsafe situation, terrors and intimidation by the Dutch and NICA forces, the Indonesian government had to be evacuated to Yogyakarta city using a train in the middle of the night, and the Yogyakarta became a capital city.

This event is known in Indonesia as the 4 January 1946 Incident (Indonesian: Peristiwa 4 Januari 1946) because the entire cabinet of Indonesia had fully arrived in Yogyakarta on 4 January 1946 after the President and Vice President of Indonesia had arrived the previous day. Situated during the Indonesian National Revolution, it was the first time the Indonesian government relocated the national capital from Jakarta to another city.
