The United States of Indonesia (RIS) was a federated state consisted of states and territories inherited from the former governorates and regencies of the Dutch East Indies which was formally transferred to the Republic of Indonesia following the Round Table Conference through the Soevereiniteitsoverdracht in December 1949. The RIS comprised sixteen main entities: seven states (negara), including the "Republic of Indonesia" consisting of parts of Java and Sumatra (a combined population of over 31 million); and the nine formerly directly-ruled territories (neo-lands, Dutch: neo-landschappen).

Apart from the Republic of Indonesia, all these constituent entities, which had populations between 100,000 and 11 million, were established by the Dutch. Also included were some smaller entities not seen as viable as distinct political entities.[1][2][3]

The last two states to dissolved and later merged into the territories of the Republic of Indonesia were State of East Indonesia and State of East Sumatra in August 1950 after it reached a concensus to "Dissolve and Merge" its territories to Indonesia in a Three-Way Conference.
