Purpose | Finding Earth's Missing Carbon Minerals |
Website | mineralchallenge.net |
The Carbon Mineral Challenge is a four-year scientific initiative to find new carbon-based minerals on Earth [1]. The impetus for the program stems from research by Dr. Robert Hazen and his colleagues that suggests that as of December 2015 there were approximately 145 "missing" carbon minerals[2]. The research utilizes distribution statistics not unlike methods used to identify new species in biology [3].
