Purdue Psychological Sciences

The Purdue Psychological Sciences major is a undergraduate and graduate level program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The program is one of nine different academic programs within the Purdue University College of Health and Human Sciences.^[1] Purdue's Psychological Sciences Program has been ranked in the top 50 of psychology departments across the nation and is known as one of the top research oriented graduate programs. Purdue University hosts not only the Psychological Sciences Program, but also the Brain and

Behavioral Sciences Major, which orientates its program for those who are pursuing a science concentrated graduate degree later in life. Purdue also has professors and research psychologists who hold groundbreaking and acclaimed research, partnering with Purdue undergraduate and graduate students. The Psychological Sciences Program offers many different courses that offer flexibility and a graduate level program that offers six different concentrations within the field of Psychological Sciences.

Department

The Department of Psychological Sciences has been ranked in the top 50 psychology departments out of more than 300 across the United States. The Department of Psychological Sciences consist of over 45 professors specializing in seven different areas of psychology that are taught in varying levels of classes held at Purdue University.^[2]

Purdue Psychological Sciences is well known for its professors whom have promoted advancement in the field of psychology monumentally. Jeffrey Karpicke, one of the most forefront researchers in cognitive psychology, has published many journals and publications, some of his most famous work with learning and memory primarily in education and retrieval. Robert Proctor, also specializing in cognitive psychology is credited as being the editor of the American Journal of Psychology, as well as, being published in many publications and research focused on selection and control of action.^[3]

Location

The highly acclaimed research university, Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Purdue Psychological Sciences degree is taught in varying locations of the campus depending on if you are conducting research, completing an undergraduate degree, or completing a graduate degree at Purdue University. The Psychological Sciences building, located off of North University Street and 3rd Street, is where most of the research is conducted, as well as, where the Psychological Sciences departmental staff offices are located.

Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate program at Purdue University has two majors to choose from within the psychological sciences program:

Brain and Behavioral Sciences Major
Psychological Sciences Major

To begin as a Pre-Psychology major at Purdue there are four basic courses that are required, PSY 120-Elementary Psychology, PSY 201-Introduction to Statistics in Psychology, PSY 203-Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology, and then one of eight foundation-level courses within psychology to become a Psychology Major when first coming to Purdue.^[4]

Brain and Behavioral Sciences Major

This program is usually designed for students wanting to pursue a graduate level degree in schools like medicine, neuroscience, biology, artificial intelligence, or robotics. This particular program requires more courses (45 credit hours out of 120 total credit hours required) that concentrate on science and information compared to the Psychological Sciences Major. This program is highly focused for students who are wanting to pursue fields of medicine in graduate study.Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). Not only does the graduate Psychological Sciences program offer the listed above six concentrations of research, but it offers a possible Certificate in Psychological Statistics. The Certificate is only offered to current students who are in the graduate program and is available to students who have a broad understanding of advanced quantitative methods.^[5]
