Poseidon Asset Management is a San Francisco-based investment firm that invests in legal cannabis companies. The company was founded in October, 2013, and in January, 2014 launched a hedge fund investing exclusively in cannabis and hemp-related assets.[1][2]

Portfolio

[edit]

While the Poseidon portfolio is not public, they are known several investment trends. The company does not invest heavily in companies directly involved with the marijuana plant. Poseidon executives have repeatedly stated that they invest mainly in companies “one step away” from touching the leaf.[3][4][5]

At least a portion of their fund invests in the software and tech sector[6], particularly in the cannabis focused social network, MassRoots[7].

Poseidon Asset Management is actively involved in the cannabis advocacy and legislative movement, and executives have stated they find it important for the companies they are invested in to also be involved.[6][8]

Executive Background

[edit]

Emily and Morgan Paxhia are siblings. They were drawn to the cannabis industry when they lost both their parents to cancer and the hospice treatment recommended cannabis. [6]

Originally from New York, they chose to launch Poseidon in California as they believed the potential for the market to be larger there.[9]

Morgan Paxhia has an investment management background[9] and has worked as a financial advisor for UBS Financial Services.[8]

Emily Paxhia has over a decade of experience as a brand consultant and researcher for financial and media companies such as American Express, Time Warner, and Viacom. [10]

Market

[edit]

Poseidon’s primary market is legal cannabis and hemp, the fastest growing industry in America.[1] Cannabis sales in 2014 were reported at $2.7 billion,[4] and $5.4 billion in 2015. Researchers expect the legal cannabis sector to exceed $21 billion by 2020.[11]
