Biography

Maxim Rubtsov was born on July 9, 1977 in Bryansk, Russia. He began to study music at the age of five, in addition to music, he was also interested in folk dances and from seven years old participated in the productions of Igor Moiseyev. He began to study flute at the Children's Art School № 1 named after TP Nikolaeva (Bryansk), where his mother taught piano. He completed his flute studies at the Moscow Conservatory and postgraduate studies in the flute class of Professor Yu. N. Dolzhikov.

In 1999, Rubtsov began working in the Russian National Orchestra, in 2003 he was appointed Principal Flute.

At the invitation of American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, he played in the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra at the Russian Art Festival[1] in 2002. Together with partners of the Russian National Orchestra Woodwind Quintet, the RNO recorded a CD and toured in Europe, Asia and the USA.

In December 2003, Rubtsov performed as solo flutist in John Corigliano's “Pied Piper Fantasy”, which premiered in the Concert Hall P. I. Tchaikovsky in Moscow. His work was highly appreciated by both the public and the composer himself[2]. Two years later, Rubtsov participated in the production of “Pied Piper Fantasy” in Murcia (Spain).

Rubtsov is one of the founders of the Russian National Orchestra Woodwind Quintet (2000) and since 2009 has been its leader. Together with Quintet partners, he recorded a CD, toured in Europe, Asia and the USA, became the winner of the International Competition-Festival of Chamber Music in Osaka (2005).

In addition to working in the orchestra, Maxim Rubtsov conducts intensive solo and chamber activities. He has performed with pianists M. Pletnev and F. Schlime, jazz musicians, Brubeck Brothers, and other soloists and ensembles in Moscow, London, cities of Russia, Spain, and the USA. In October 2008, he conducted a series of solo concerts for children in the Bryansk Philharmonic[3]. He also collaborates with masters of classical ballet and contemporary dance in Russia and abroad.

In August 2011, the American recording company Blue Griffin Recording released a solo disc by the musician “Russian Romance”[4][5]. This disc features works by Russian and Soviet composers performed by Maxim Rubtsov and pianist Sergey Kvitko[6], who also produced the recording.
