Catherine Musakali is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Fellow of both the Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya and the Institute of Directors of Kenya. She is also a certified Public Secretary acting as Company Secretary to several companies, a Governance Auditor, a Corporate Governance Trainer and a Board Evaluator.
Career and education[edit]
Catherine is the Founder of [1], a firm specializing in governance matters and commercial legal consultancies. Prior to founding Dorion Associates, Catherine worked for Kenya Shell Limited (Now Vivo Energy Kenya Limited) as their Company Secretary and Head of Legal for over fifteen (15) years, during which period she managed the legal functions of Shell operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia. She worked for shell in the United Kingdom in 2006, during which period she specialized in Mergers and Acquisitions and other commercial transactions as well as being the Legal Focal Point for all Contracting and Procurement matters for its businesses in the 23 Countries in Africa.
Catherine set up and managed the Legal department of UAP Provincial Insurance Limited from 1992 to 1997 during which period she represented her employer in the industry body, the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI).
Catherine is an active member of her professional bodies, The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), The Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya (ICS) and the Institute of Directors (IOD). She has in the past served in various capacities at ICS, including as Chair (2012-2014), Chair of Education & Professional Development Committee (2018-2010) and Member, Legislation and Corporate Governance Committee (2010-2012); and as Council Member, (2008-2014), Council of the Corporate Secretaries International Association, a global body of governance professionals (2012-2014)
Recognized and well respected in industry as a governance expert who’s developed governance policies for a number of institutions as well as consulted for global bodies such as IFC and the World Bank, Catherine led the development of three landmark codes of Corporate Governance in Kenya namely, i) Mwongozo, The Code of Corporate Governance for State Corporations in Kenya; ii) The Capital Markets Code of Corporate Governance Practices for Issuers of Securities in Kenya; and iii) The ICPSK Code of Corporate Governance for Private Companies. In addition, she has been Chief Judge, Kenya Corporate Governance FiRe Awards
Catherine, who supports gender representation in corporate Kenya particularly in the boardroom, is the Founder and Chair of ‘Women on Boards Network Kenya’ a nonprofit which prepares and supports senior women to access board positions.
Catherine holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Master of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi, a Higher National Diploma in Law (Kenya), as well as a certificate in Securities and Investment from the Securities and Investment Institute (London). She serves on the Board of Kenya Railways, Business Registration Service, Breakfast Club Africa, a Pan African CEO membership organization and Women on Boards Network where she is also Chair. She’s also a Member of the Kenya Capital Market’s ‘10-year Master Plan Implementation Committee.

She was awarded a national award, the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya on 12th December 2022 in recognition of her work in institutionalising good governance in Kenya
