Kirsten Gillibrand 2020 Presidential Campaign

Background

Gillibrand began her career as a lawyer but left because she wanted to become a civil servant rather than continue representing large corporations. Following this, she briefly served in the Housing and Urban Development department in Washington. In 2006, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to serve the people of the 20th district of New York. In 2008, when Hillary Clinton left New York to become secretary of state, Gillibrand became the new junior senator for the state of New York.

Campaign & Touring

Currently, Gillibrand plans to begin in her home state of New York to begin building momentum for her campaign among her most likely supporters. Following this, she intends to visit traditionally Democratic states where people are more likely to agree with her message and act as supporters for her candidacy. Closer to the election, Gillibrand will spend more time in swing states in order to show why they should support her over the other candidate(s).

Beliefs

Gillibrand is a firm believer in women's rights and aims to continue a long fight towards gender equality. Oftentimes, she is known to look beyond breaking the glass ceiling and notes that the sticky floor needs cleaning. There may be plenty of ceiling shattering moments of note, but she hopes to advance beyond that. Particularly, Gillibrand supports the institution of paid leave in place for all new mothers or assurance that a parent will not lose their job for absence due to family emergencies. Finally, she also hopes to reduce and eradicate sexual harassment and or assault in society and culture.

Slogans or Concepts

Gillibrand is a significant proponent of the #MeToo movement that promotes awareness of sexual harassment and or assault, particularly in the workplace. Additionally, her own movement is called "Off the Sidelines," and she encourages those involved to push themselves further in life. For instance, she encourages followers to aim for the higher position in a workplace, and she believes that every person has the potential to change their lives for the better.
