Jonathan Lu (Zhaoxi) succeeded the company's lead founder, Jack Ma, as Chief Executive Officer on May 10, 2013. Compared to Ma, few people have heard of Lu [1]. However, Lu joined Alibaba Group in 2000 and has held several leadership roles at the company. He has led three of its major divisions and steered Taobao, the group’s market-dominant online shopping platform, during a period of high growth [2].
Lu was chosen as Alibaba Group's succeeding leader in March 2013 by Jack Ma for his deep knowledge of the e-commerce business [3]. Lu made his first speech as Alibaba Group CEO on May 10, 2013 in Hangzhou, China, to more than 20,000 Alibaba Group Employees [4]. He thanked Ma for giving him, once a hotel waiter, the chance to shine [5]. Although not an original of the 18 founding members of Alibaba, Lu was part of the early team of members to have created the e-commerce firm.
Lu holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from the China Europe International Business School [6].
