Nikolay Gur'yevich Chetaev (23 November (6 December) ,1902, Karaduli, Laishevskiy uyezd, Kazan province, Russian Empire (now Tartarstan) — 17 October, 1959, Moscow, USSR) — Russian Soviet mecanicien and mathematician (1943). Lenin Prize laureate (1960).
Biography
[edit]N. G. Chetaev graduated from Kazan University in 1924. His doctoral advisor was D. N. Zeyliguer. In 1929 he did his postdoctoral study at Aerodynamic Institute of Goettingen University.
From 1930 to 1940 N. G. Chetaev was a professor of Kazan University where he created a research school of the theory of stability of motion. In 1939 he was conferred Doctor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics. From 1940 to 1959 he held a position of Full professor at Moscow University. In 1940 N. G. Chetaev organized and became a head of Department of General Mechanics at Institute of Mechanics of the Soviet Academy of Sciences that was open in the same year. From 1945 to 1953 he was Director of the Institute.
