User:Nafsadh/Best practices for Bangladesh related articles
Article titles
[edit]Article titles should be widely accepted modern English name. Other names, alternate spelling and local names can be redirected. Article lead would include alternative names and spelling whenever appropriate.
People
[edit]Commonly used spelling of names shall be in article title. Mention full legal name and Bengali name in lead.
Places
[edit]Organizations, institutions
[edit]Use full name and mention common abbreviations in lead.
Companies
[edit]For article title use trade name dropping Ltd, Pvt etc. In lead use full name including Ltd, Pvt etc. For example, Rahimafrooz as article title but open article intro as: "Rahimafrooz (Bangladesh) Ltd. is a ...".
Language
[edit]Bengali in articles
[edit]- Local name in Bengali shall appear appropriately in lead within parentheses and using {{lang-bn}}. Do not use <big>for Bengali scripts, if you find Bengali fonts are too tiny, it is probably because you need to fix your browser settings.
- Use of Bengali shall be limited to article lead only. Bengali letters stand out within English letters, and often distract usual flow for readers who do not speak Bengali. Even use of Bengali in tables can be distracting. Many WikiProjects have adopted policies to limit local languages in lead only. Even extreme, WikiProject India decided not to use Indic scripts even in the lead.
- When transliterating Bengali, use the standard followed by Bangla Academy. For pronunciation, use IPA.
Bengali vs Bangla
[edit]This is English Wikipedia, which means the language used here is globally used version of English language. Thus all names and proper nouns are globally recognized English. Bangla is not an English word, Bengali is. In English language, Germans are not called Deutsch, French are not called Français. Editors from Bangladesh should respect current standard of English and use the word Bengali when editing English Wikipedia.
English: British vs American
[edit]While Wikipedia does not favor any national variety of English, within a given article the conventions of one particular variety should be followed consistently. Generally articles about US are in American English and articles about UK are in British English. Textbooks in Bangladesh use the British version. But, many contributors in these articles tend to use American version. Thus it is up to debate whether to use American or British English consistently throughout WikiProject Bangladesh.
Topic specific style guide
[edit]Places of Bangladesh
[edit]- In {{infobox}} use the same name as article title.
- Add local Bengali name in infobox for all places in Bangladesh.
- Upazila and thana has no direct translation in English but hierarchically equivalent to sub-district. Though article titles use these word as part of proper name (see:WP:BDPLACE), in article lead, for better understanding of audience, use sub-district in parentheses; for example:
- Mirzapur Upazila is an upazila (sub-district) of Tangail District in Bangladesh.
- and
- Dhanmondi Thana is a thana (sub-district) in Dhaka.
