The Nanobusiness Commercialization Association (NanoBCA) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit trade organization dedicated to creating a friendly political environment that nurtures research and innovation in nanotechnology, promotes tech-transfer of nanotechnologies from academia to industry, encourages private capital investments in nanotechnology companies, and helps its company members bringing innovative nanotechnology products to the market. Founded in 2001, NanoBCA is the world's first nonprofit association focused on the commercialization of nanotechnologies. NanoBCA has a long and continuous history of actively representing its members on Capitol Hill and advocating for the continued allocation of significant funds per the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI). NanoBCA dedicated work in shaping national nanotechnology policy has created a favorable policy climate for nanotechnology at every level, benefiting academic research, small businesses, and the manufacturing industry. NanoBCA has been advocating Congress to ensure the continuous allocation of government funds to nanotechnology, such as basic research and SBIR grants, throughout all the major government agencies (DOD, DOE, NFS, NIH, etc.). NanoBCA also works to accelerate the commercialization of nanotechnology innovations by representing its members on Wall Street, drawing the attention of the global financial community to this high-potential sector.

Based in Washington, D.C., and Shelton, Connecticut, the NanoBCA serves the entirety of United States and its territories. Their vision is focused on ensuring that the United States is and remains a global leader in the burgeoning field of nanotechnology. By monitoring newly passed and proposed legislation from the Federal and State governments, it ventures to assure the safe, secure, and beneficial used of nanotechnology and nanoscience for all peoples.

NanoBCA is focused on and dedicated to:

6. Inform membership with regard EHS regulation from Federal (EPA and FDA) and State Governments. Monitor proposed legislation from Federal and State government.

NanoBCA seeks to ensure that the United States --its companies, universities, and people-- are and remain global leaders in the burgeoning nanotechnology field. • Mark Modzelewski, an entrepreneur, executive, and investor in early stage ventures involving clean technologies and “health 2.0.” Mr. Modzelewski was NanoBCA's first executive director serving from November 2001 until May 2004. During his professional career, Mr. Modzelewski, besides founding NanoBCA, also co-founded a number of technology companies and investments firms, including: the Water Innovations Alliance Foundation, Lux Research, Bang Ventures, New Europe Ventures, the Benet Group, and Leonardo BioSystems, among others. He has been a member of the Nanotechnology Technical Advisory Group to the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology (PCAST). He is a graduate of the College of Law (JD) at University of Denver and Boston University (BFA, Painting).
• Nathan Tinker, Ph.D., an entrepreneur in emerging biotechnologies. Dr. Tinker is currently the executive director of the New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA). During his professional career, besides founding NanoBCA, Dr. Tinker also served as executive director of the Sabin Vaccine Institute -Cancer Vaccine Consortium, director of the Nanotechnology and Biotechnology Practice at Antenna Group. Dr. Tinker has been serving on several advisory boards, such as the Boards of the Physicians Interactive Holdings, Viral Genetics, Versilant Technologies, Namar Consulting, the Kingsborough College Bioscience Advisory Committee.
• Josh Wolfe, an experienced investment banker in emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology, semiconductors, and life sciences. Mr. Wolfe is a co-founder and current managing partner at Lux Capital. During his professional career, besides founding NanoBCA, Mr. Wolfe has also been serving on the Boards of Crystal IS and Lux Research. He worked at Salomon Smith Barney's Investment Banking group, Merrill Lynch, and Prudential Securities. Mr. Wolfe is also a columnist with Forbes Magazine and Editor of the monthly Forbes/Wolfe Emerging Tech Report. He graduated with distinction from Cornell University with a B.S. in Economics and Finance.
• Vincent Caprio, an advocate for government funding of emerging technologies, as well as producer of tradeshows and conferences focusing on emerging markets. Mr. Caprio was a founding board member and event director of NanoBCA since 2002 and has served as the executive director since 2009. Throughout his professional career, Mr. Caprio has had a distinguished role at producing and directing a series of conferences related to emerging technologies, including the Annual NanoBCA Conference series (since 2002), the MIT Technology Review Conference, EmTech, in 2003–06, the Lux Research's Summit in 2005–06, the Forbes/IBM Executive Summit in 2002; and Red Herring Conferences in 2000–02. Mr. Caprio is also co-founder and executive director of the Water Innovations Alliance Foundation and has organized the Water 2.0 conference series since 2009. Moreover, since 2002, Mr. Caprio has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer at over 75 conferences. In 2008, Mr. Caprio was appointed to the board of directors for the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association Communications, Inc. based in Rockford, IL. He graduated from Villanova University in 1979 with a B.S in Accounting and completed a MBA from Northeastern in 1987. Mr. Caprio is a member of Villanova University's Financial Club and serves as an active member of the Villanova Alumni Recruitment Network.
• Griffith Kundhal, an experienced advocate for the commercialization of nanotechnology. He is currently serving as NanoBCA general counsel as well as executive chairman of the Colorado Nanotechnology Alliance. During his professional career, Mr. Kundhal also served as the vice president for Convergence (nano, bio, and IT) in the Life Sciences section of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, Director of Global Programs at the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Denver, and an attorney at practice in the life sciences sector. Mr. Kundhal co-authored “The Handbook Of Nanotechnology Business, Policy And Intellectual Property Law” (Wiley 2004); “Nanotechnology: Intellectual Property Challenges, The Colorado Lawyer (February 2005); “Intergovernmental Collaboration Key to Nano Success” (National Cancer Institute Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer, 2006); “Where Science and Law Meet: Nanotechnology and Intellectual Property Issues” (National Cancer Institute Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer, 2006); and Yearbook Of Nanotechnology In Society [Communications in the Age of Nanotechnology] (Arizona State University, 2007.) He has also been serving as Associate Editor for the Nanotech Law & Business Journal. He holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. from the University of Alabama, and a J.D. from the University of Denver.

History

Founding the Organization

In November 2001, NanoBCA was founded by three visionary leaders in the field of innovative technologies – F. Mark Modzelewski, Nathan Tinker, Josh Wolfe, – with the intention of boosting the advancements of nanotechnology from basic research to commercial products. NanoBCA has a successful history of serving its members, advocating policies, and accomplishing tangible results.

In January 2002, Vincent Caprio and Griffith Kundhal became founding board members. The organization has been directed and managed by Mr. Caprio as executive director since 2009. Mr. Caprio takes care of moderating productive discussion among its members, the Government, Congress, academia, and industry, as well as organizing the annual conferences and roundtables. Mr. Caprio also recruits new members and ensures satisfaction of the current members. Under his management, the number of members has been growing steadily (Note that also the number of nanotechnology companies has been growing). Mr. Caprio has organized NanoBCA's annual conference, the organization's most notable event, since 2002.
