History
[edit]Coal mining past
[edit]The property was originally owned by George Vicary and used for coal mining in the 1880s.[1] Miners used the property for secret meetings to organize for better labor conditions and better wages.[1] A carving in the sandstone at Rocky Glen dates to 1887.[1] Mining in the area ceased in the 1920s.[1]
Official establishment
[edit]On November 21, 2012, the city council held a public hearing at Peoria City Hall on whether the city should use federal land acquisition funds to purchase the property.[1] The city council voted purchase on December 11, 2012 and deeded the property to the Peoria Park District.[1]
