Greetings! My name is Saoirse Courts (though my name was Nico for quite a while) and I am a mathematician and data scientist who until recently was working with biologists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to study somatic hypermutation. If you are looking to talk to me, you'll have better luck at my personal website.

I earned my PhD in math at the University of Washington in 2022. My original Wikipedia account (which has since been retired) can be found here.

My Interests

[edit]
A commutative diagram demonstrating the axioms for a group.
A commutative diagram incorporating all the axioms of a group.

My research in graduate school was related to the structure and representation theory of certain kinds of Hopf algebras as well as the intersection of this theory with noncommutative geometry and category theory. You can check out my dissertation by visiting this page

Unrelated to my degree but very related to my interests is AI. I am fascinated by the idea that we may one day build a synthetic analog of a human brain and I am interested in the things that doing so would teach us about technology, brains, and how we learn.

More generally I am a technophile and take every opportunity I can to learn more about computers and technology at large.

Overarching all these ideas is my strong belief that women, LGBT+ folk, and other traditionally underrepresented groups in math have a vital role to play in all areas of life, including STEM fields and I do my best to actively support these people in becoming role models for the new generation.

I am interested in politics and the ways we organize ourselves into a society. An important part of my ethos is the idea that freedom of information and, in particular, open access publishing are absolutely vital to our success as a whole.
