Dianne Ouellette is an Independent filmmaker. She was born in Prince George, British Colombia, on December 27, 1967 but has lived in Saskatchewan since 1972. She has a BFA (1995) in Film and Video and a BA (1993) in Theatre from the University of Regina. She has worked in many different fields in the film industry including producer, writer, director, cinematographer, videographer, photographer, and editor. Ouellette has served as president and instructor for the Saskatchewan Filmpool and has also served as editor of Splice Magazine.

Her works including december, Kathryn - I Heart Regina, sIgh have been screened internationally in Paris, Croatia, India, Italy, Australia, San Francisco, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Telluride. In Canada, her works have been screened in Vancouver, Victoria and Toronto.

She has won numerous awards including the Golden Sheaf award for Best of Saskatchewan at the Yorkton International Short Film Festival (2000) for her 35mm short film Daisy, and Best Experimental Film in 2006 for her 16mm short film Ashes. In 2008 she won a Golden Remi Award for Best Ethnic / Cultural Film and Video Production at WorldFest Houston Film Festival and was also a Winner of a Creative Excellence Saskatchewan Tourism Award for the 13 part documentary, Truth or Tale, she produced and directed.

Ouellette worked as an independent contractor within the Training and Development department of SaskPower for 18 years. She completed over 2200 hours of video and multi-media projects for SaskPower. Ouellette has now been working for the University of Regina as a research support and media lab manager since 2013.

Ouellette’s interest in Super 8 films has made its way into her movies through her use Kodak Super 8 whenever she can. Her short film, Red is Dead, was the only Canadian chosen as one of the finalists in the Kodak Super 8 Filmmaking Challenge and received second place. It also received third place in the finals at the Slamdance Film Festival. Ouellette said she has always loved filming with Super 8 because it creates a sense of nostalgia: "Super 8 is amazing because it is film. You can't duplicate the film look with digital video in my opinion. Seeing the grain that dances on the screen, you just can't duplicate that with video."

One thing that makes Ouellette’s works interesting is that they are always personal. For example, her latest movie Red is Dead is a story of her pets surrounding her mother, Judy Feduk, as she was fighting lung cancer. Or in Alexander, she gave her Super 8 camera to Alexander, a five year old boy to shoot on Christmas day. Ouellette uses film making as an artistic and therapeutic outlet. The personal approach she has in her works and the short length of the films make the audience feel like they are looking at something forbidden for just a few minutes. The joy of that experience turns Ouellette’s films into something unique and beautiful.
