NFL Tax exemption

[edit]

In 1946, the NFL successfully applied to the IRS to become a nonprofit organization and be tax exempt. This was when the league was in the midst of struggling finically due to the entry of the U.S. in World War II. While the NFL claimed it had a "non-profit mission," some critics believe the tax exemption is due to a loophole added in Section 501(c)(6) enacted in 1966. in 2015 however, the NFL announced they would no longer have the tax-exempt status during that fiscal year.[3]

A 6% increase before the rule was created.[5] Under the rule, Tony Dungy became the first ever African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl.[6] In 2020, The NFL expanded the Rooney Rule by passing 2020 Resolution JC-2A. The Resolution rewards teams third round draft picks for developing minority individuals to become head coaches or general managers. The Resolution also requires teams to interview at least two minority candidates for a head coaching position.[7] As of 2021, there are two active African-American NFL head coaches.[8]
