Barrapunto is a Spanish news website which features discussion of free software, science, technology and digital rights. The website is updated several times to the day with articles that are usually brief summaries of the news from other websites or links to those news stories. After, readers are allowed to comment on these news items. The website resembles a blog in many aspects, especially the Internet forum-style comments section that follows each posted bulletin. The name of the website, Barrapunto, is inspired by Slashdot, a predecessor technology-related news website which features user-submitted and editor-evaluated current affairs news. Like Slashdot, the website name was chosen with the intention to confuse those who tried to pronounce the URL of the site ("h-t-t-p-dos puntos-barra-barra-barra-punto-punto-com").

Original design of Barrapunto.

Barrapunto first came about on June 7, 1999 through the efforts of Javier Candeira[1] and many others as an inspiration of Slashdot,[2] which had been launched in September 1997 by Rob Malda. Barrapunto was created for people in a university environment and for the free software community, which at the time constituted the original editors of the site. At first, Barrapunto used the same software as Slashdot, but they eventually made their own modifications for the final version of the website. The software used is Slash, an open source collection of Perl modules, and other free software.

Barrapunto is a referring one in the Spanish-speaking Internet, is a publication system of the news open but controlled by the publishers.[3] Since July 8, 2004, the material published on Barrapunto has been protected under the Creative Commons attribution (by-2.0) license.[4] Barrapunto was the winner of the Premios 20Blogs organized by the online newspaper 20 minutos, in the category of "Best blog community".[5]
