From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magnetovision utilizes the measurement of the distribution of magnetic field induction (or magnetic field strength) value in a particular plane or in space and presenting it with a 2D image (for the plane) or 3D (for space). The name “magnetovision” comes from an analogy with thermal imaging, because the color in the magnetovision image corresponds to the magnetic flux density or the value of the magnetic field strength at a given point. It is also possible to obtain monochrome image in the form of isolines.[1]

Definition

[edit]

McGraw-Hill Science & Technology Dictionary describes the term shortly as: Magnetovision [mag′ned·ə‚vizh·ən] (engineering): A method of measuring and displaying magnetic field distributions in which scanning results from a thin-film Permalloy magnetoresistive sensor are processed numerically and presented in the form of a color map on a video display unit.[2][3]

Application

[edit]

Magnetovision can be used to measure stress in the ferromagnetic materials, in relation to the inverse magnetostrictive (Villari) effect. By measuring the intensity of the magnetic field at the surface of samples subjected to mechanical stresses, good correlation of the magnetovision images and the stress distribution inside the test piece was obtained.[4] It can also be used as a tool for investigation of magnetomechanical principles, including the:reverse magnetostriction and magnetostriction in smart magnetic materials and composites, martensitic transformation induces plastic strain in shape memory alloys, NDT investigation, identification of local plastic deformation and texture of ferromagnetic materials, magnetic polygraphy and others[5]

Public security systems

[edit]

Magnetovision can be potentially used as a passive ferromagnetic objects detection system. The application of passive magnetic imaging system is vital, because the active metal detectors induction field can be sensed by specially constructed detonators. This applies particularly to the new generations of booby traps and IED’s (improvised explosive device), reacting to the presence of active detectors, and to some extent to magnetic influence AT mines, which presents a direct threat to minesweeper’s life[6]. By measuring the magnetic anomalies of the natural Earths field, magnetovision scanning system can help in detection and localization of ferromagnetic objests.[7]
