Recurring Characters
[edit]Characters
[edit]- Mick "The Bull" Daly: Publican of the Year - a grotesque, ignorant, racist, homophobic, sexist, vulgar, rural barman. The Bull has appeared frequently in almost every episode. His dialogue generally takes the form of beligerant tirades and anecdotes against all members of Irish society, demeaning them in various ways and usually insisting that they harbour homosexual tendencies. The Bull is caricature of an older generation of rural Irish men who are cynical of a state that failed them in so many ways in the past. Catchphrases: "Fuckin' Quares!!!", "Are ya fuckin' joking me?!"
- President for Life & It - The President for life is a whimsical, culturally adept spokeswoman for all things Irish, frequently breaking into song and dance alongside her husband "It" whose head is trapped in a birdcage from which he can only speak when the door is opened. Parody: Mary Robinson & Nicolas Robinson
- Pat Kenny - Is a meek, nasal-voiced, socially-awkward television show presenter who consistently makes embarrassing blunders live on air that ,by and large, make him look like a complete tool. Catchphrase: "Wow". Parody: Pat Kenny
- John - John is a sado-masochistic call-in radio show host from North Dublin who pleasures himself in various brutal and perverted ways to the complaints of callers live on air, occasionally with a masked, leather-clad dwarf to instigate punishments. Catchphrase: "How bad does it make you feel?", "Ah... Jaysus!" Parody: Joe Duffy
- Hector - Hector is a hyper-active, ginger, "young foghorn" that invariably tries to find craic in the most drab and depressing of circumstances e.g. funerals, betting offices, polling stations, boiling water on a stove. Catchphrase: "Rahoo, rahoo, rahoo! Parody: Hector Ó hEochagáin
- Cavan Men - A pair of toothless simpletons, dressed in ragged 19th century peasant clothing, covered in faeces and straw. They generally display an incredulously poor understanding of how any aspect of society works and speak with thick, rural Cavan accents.
- The Government Cabinet - This includes: "The Minister for Using Three Similar Words", "The Minister of Using Breathlessness to Express Sincerity", and "The Minister for Laughing Inappropriately". All of which are completely out of touch with the common man and appear to be ruling the country because no one else would possibly be stupid enough to otherwise do so.
Reception
[edit]The Savage Eye has received generally favourable reviews and praise in the Irish media, it's content described as a "a Gatling gun full of bile and rage" but being praised as "it goes so much further than most of what passes for comedy in Ireland". It has been nominated for a number of IFTA awards and is going into it's 4th season.
