Henry Anton Steig (February 19, 1906-) was an American jeweler and writer.
Biography
[edit]Steig was born in New York, the son of Joseph and Laura Steig, who encouraged their children's creative ambitions. [1]He was the brother of cartoonist William Steig.[2] In 1941, he published the novel Send Me Down, a story about two brothers who work as jazz musicians. Writing in The New Republic, Otis Ferguson said that the book was "neither good fiction nor good music talk"[3] However, in 1952, Orrin Keepnews wrote that the book, while "rather lopsided and confused" nevertheless "gave a remarkably vivid picture of the daily grind and every-day attitudes of young white jazzmen of approximately the early Benny Goodman and Dorsey Brothers era"[4]
