Prominent features

Connecticut College, a highly selective private liberal arts college. Chartered 1911 as Connecticut College for Women. Coed since 1969. New London derives many benefits from the presence of the college, a few of the most popular and tangible are

• The Connecticut College Arboretum, a 750 acre (3 km²) arboretum and botanical garden established in 1931.
• Palmer Auditorium. Built 1939. Seats 1,298 and is fully equipped for theatrical, concert and film presentations.
• Harkness Chapel. Built 1939 in "colonial Georgian" by James Gamble Rogers. Seats 400. Excellent acoustics.

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is a separate institution but is located on the Connecticut College Campus. Housed in a handsome Neo-Classical building designed by Charles A. Platt, the permanent collection of over 15,000 objects includes paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, furniture, decorative arts, and American art from the 18th through 20th centuries.

Ye Antientist Burial Ground, circa 1652. Not only a significant repository of the first generation of New London's settlers, but an open air museum of the early stonecutter's art as well. A remarkable variety of different carving schools.

    • New London County Courthouse - The New London County Courthouse built by Isaac Fitch in 1784 now serves as the New London Judicial District Courthouse. It is one of the oldest courthouses in continuous use in the country[1].

    • Custom House - The U.S. Custom House in New London figured prominently in the Amistad incident of 1839-1841. Built in 1833 and designed by architect Robert Mills, it now includes a museum open to the public, and is the oldest continuously operating customhouse in the United States[2].
