Burton R. Lifland is a federal bankruptcy judge in Southern District of New York. He was formerly chief judge in that district as well as of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel in the Second Circuit.

Education

Lifland graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 and earned his J.D. from Fordham University Law School in 1954.

Before his appointment to judge in 1980, he was a practicing attorney with Lifland, Marcus & Angel; Levy, Levy & Ruback; and Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Heine, Underberg & Casey.

Publications

Judge Lifland wrote Chapter 11 of Theory and Practice: A Guide to Reorganization. He is a contributing editor of Norton Bankruptcy Law. Judge Lifland is a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.

Affiliations

Lifland is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He was a member of the Judicial Conference Subcommittee on Bankruptcy Case management and a current member of the American Bar Association’s Select Advisory Committee on Business Reorganization (SABRE) and a founding member of the International Insolvency Institute. He has been a lecturer at the Practicing Law Institute, and the American Law Institute/American Bankruptcy Institute as well as other professional institutions.
