Bloomberg BNA - formerly known as The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. and also known as BNA - is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bloomberg L.P. that publishes specialized online and print news and information for professionals in business and government. It is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, USA.[3]

BNA was founded in 1929 by David Lawrence[4] and from 1946 until 2011 was the oldest employee-owned company in the United States.[5] BNA was acquired by Bloomberg L.P. in September 2011.[6]

History

[edit]

BNA was founded in 1929 by newsman David Lawrence as a subsidiary of United States Daily,[7] a newspaper founded by Lawrence in 1926 devoted to reporting "the activities of government."[8] BNA's first publication was U.S. Patent, Trademark & Copyright Reports (now United States Patent Quarterly).[9]

In 1933, United States Daily was converted into a weekly publication called United States News, now known as US News & World Report.[10] Lawrence started United States Daily in 1926 to share government news and information with business people, politicians and community leaders.[11] Law Journal (now “U.S. Law Week”) was also created in 1933 with Dean Dinwoodey as its managing editor.[12]

In April 1941, BNA launched the Daily Report on Price & Production Controls which was deemed essential to the war effort and given an unlimited allocation of paper during WWII.[13]

Five years later, in 1946, Lawrence sold BNA to five of his top editors: Dean Dinwoodey, John D. Stewart, Ed Donnell, Adolph Magidson and John Tyler. They in turn opened up ownership to the rest of their BNA colleagues and from 1947 until 2011, the company was owned entirely by current and former employees.[6] Until 2011, BNA was the oldest wholly employee-owned company in the United States.[5]

On August 25, 2011, Bloomberg L.P announced it would be purchasing BNA for an estimated $990 million.[14] The transaction closed in late September 2011 at which time Bloomberg paid $39.50 a share in cash through a tender offer to BNA's employee-owners. Bloomberg purchased BNA to bolster its existing Bloomberg Government (BGov), Bloomberg Law (BLaw) and Bloomberg News services.[15]

Services

[edit]

BNA produces more than 350 daily, weekly, monthly and up-to-the-minute news publications in topic areas that include corporate law and business, employee benefits, employment and labor law, environment, health and safety, health care, human resources, intellectual property, litigation, and tax and accounting.[16] BNA's research and data division offers custom research, data and document retrieval services.[17]

Information compiled by BNA's reporters and analysts is available to BGov and BLaw subscribers.[18]

Corporate awards

[edit]

BNA was named one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" by Fortune in 1990, 1998[19] and 2000.[20] In 1998, BNA was selected by Working Mother magazine as one of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" for a ninth year. In 1999, BNA was listed by Washingtonian magazine as one of the "Best Companies to Work for in Washington."[21]

BNA was given the Business Ethics Award for Employee Ownership by Corporate Responsibility magazine in 2000.[22]
