Fu Bao (Chinese: 福宝; lit. 'Lucky treasure/treasure that brings happiness', Korean: 푸바오; born July 20, 2020) is a female giant panda born at Everland Panda World on July 20, 2020. She was the first panda cub to be born in South Korea. Fu Bao gained popularity with the public due to her frequent appearance on Everland's official social media, with YouTube videos featuring her regularly reaching millions of views.
On April 3, 2024, Fu Bao left South Korea to live in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China.[1]

Fu Bao's parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao, arrived in South Korea in 2016 as part of China's panda diplomacy program. Fu Bao was the first of their cubs, born through natural conception on July 20, 2020. She weighed 197 grams (0.43 lbs) at birth and measured 16.5 cm (6.5 in) long.[2] In 2023, her twin sisters Rui Bao and Hui Bao were also born at Everland's Panda World.[3]
Fu Bao became immensely popular in South Korea, both online and offline. A short viral video posted in December 2020 of Fu Bao interacting with her caregiver gained over 16 million views as of May 2024. Kang Cheol-won, one of the zookeepers in charge of caring for Fu Bao, rose to prominence along with the panda, gaining the nickname "Grandpa" (할부지) for his affectionate relationship with Fu Bao. A TV show featuring the two, titled "Fu Bao and Grandpa" (푸바오와 할부지) aired on the South Korean channel SBS starting on November 23, 2023. The first episode attained an audience rating of 4.1% according to Nielsen Korea, making it the 11th-most watched program that day.[4]
Everland reported that approximately 5.5 million people visited Fu Bao's exhibit during her nearly four year tenure, and total views on YouTube videos featuring Fu Bao posted by the park reached over 500 million.[5]
Due to the nature of the panda diplomacy arrangement, Fu Bao—considered the property of China despite her place of birth—was required to be relocated to China before her fourth birthday in order to join the panda breeding program. Her final public appearance at Everland in March 2024 drew thousands of visitors, some of whom waited up to six hours to see her.[6]
