History
[edit]eApps® is a hosting company based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. eApps Hosting was founded in May of 1986 as Strategic Systems Consulting, Inc. providing IT consulting, software development and project management services for Fortune 500 companies. Strategic Systems Consulting, Inc. does business under the eApps brand name, a registered trademark.
With the advent of the Internet, the company began developing web applications, including eCommerce, B2B, Portal, and content management systems.
In April of 1996, the company launched its Lotus Domino application hosting service, followed by Linux hosting services featuring the Apache Tomcat Java application server. eApps was one of the first hosting companies in the world to support Lotus Domino [1] and Apache Tomcat technologies. In 2002 the company phased out of consulting and project management and transitioned to offering application hosting services exclusively. At this time the company also began offering Virtual Private Server hosting, using open source VServer. In 2004 eApps adopted Parallels Virtuozzo [2] (VZ) VPS technology for its Virtual Private Server hosting plans. The company started offering hosting and support for a full range of middleware application servers in addition to Apache Tomcat, including JBoss, GlassFish, Liferay Portal, and the popular CMS applications such as WordPress, Joomla (initially Mambo), and Drupal.
In 2011 the company’s evolution continued with the launch of a new service, called Virtual Machinein the Cloud. The environment is powered by OnApp [3], the leading provider of software for the management of Cloud hosting services.
1.1. Etymology
The company was founded in 1986 by George Kerns, Richard Lingsch, and Mary Callahan as Strategic Systems Consulting, Inc. Later on in 1996, the company launched it’s hosting service, under the name eApps to convey a specialization on supporting web applications. At this time, organizations began to see the value of using the Internet to support business processes with customers, vendors, partners, and employees. The company’s focus on web applications was a differentiator in the web hosting marketplace.
1.2. Main founders
Prior to starting the company, the founders were associates at Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, a predecessor firm to Deloitte. Barry Deutsch, another associate at Deloitte, Haskins & Sells joined the company immediately and assisted with the launch of the company.
Richard Lingsch serves as the President of the company and oversees all of the company’s operations. He has a BA in Economics from Hiram College and a Master of Accountancy from Bowling Green State University.
Barry Deutsch serves as Vice President of the company and is responsible for infrastructure, administration, and personnel. He has a BS in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University.
Data Centers
[edit]eApps operates it’s own hosting infrastructure, including network, server, and storage equipment and software. The hosting infrastructure, designed and managed by eApps, is housed in enterprise grade data centers, owned and operated by a major data center provider.
When eApps launched the hosting service in 1996, the operation was housed in a computer room in the company’s offices. In September of 2000 the operation was established at a Sungard data center in Alpharetta, GA. In February of 2006 eApps moved operations from Sungard to the Suwanee, GA data center owned and operated by Quality Technology Services (QTS). This was a major project involving over 10,000 domain names, several thousand IP address and hundreds of physical devices. The QTS Suwanee Data Center is a 376,000 square feet facility protected and monitored by 24x7 security. Today QTS owns operates and manages over 3 million square feet of data center infrastructure.
In May of 2012, eApps announced the opening of a second hosting presence in the Richmond, VA data center of QTS. With 1.3 million square feet of data center infrastructure available, when fully built out QTS’ Richmond Data Center will be one of the largest in the world.
