"Ego" received general praise from music critics. Upon its release, Kelsey McKinney of Vox chose the song as one of the best released in January 2015. The writer said the combination of its "catchy" chorus and drum instrumentation "make[s] it easy to imagine this being a radio hit".[11] Pigeons & Planes selected "Ego" as the 93rd-best-song of 2015.[4] Paul Connolly of The Local put the song at number six on their 2015 list of top Swedish tracks, calling it "pure, perfect pop".[12]

"Ego" failed to chart in Sweden, but stood as the 43rd-most-played song of 2015 on contemporary hit radio station Sveriges Radio P3.[13]
