Dr. Paulino E. Albano Sr.
Birth
Dr. Paulino E. Albano Sr. was born in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on 18 June 1911, the seventh and youngest child of Eusebio Beltran Albano, a street lighter in town proper of Sarrat, and Hilaria Edralin Estavillo, a housewife.
His siblings were Epigenia, Candida, Fidel (a Catholic priest), Lucio, Mateo, and Sotero. Four days after his birth, he was baptized at the St. Monica Parish Church, a few minutes' walk from his home on 22 June 1911. It was then the feast of St. Paulino of Nola from whom he obtained his Christian name.

He studied for his primary education at the Sarrat Central Elementary School. He then took his secondary education at the Laoag Provincial High School. He moved to Manila to study for his Associate in Arts degree at the University of the Philippines Manila. He later transferred at the University of Santo Tomas where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1939.

Together with Pilar, he founded the St. Rita Hospital College of Nursing and School of Midwifery (Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila; 1940) and the Rural Bank of Sarrat (Sarrat, Ilocos Norte; 1971). Their tandem was also significant in the construction of a bigger church for the St. Joseph de Gagalangin Parish.
Japanese Occupation
When Manila was declared an ‘Open City’ during the Japanese Occupation, the Albano couple became a source of hope for their neighbors, providing them with moral, spiritual, and physical support during those challenging times. During the Liberation of Manila (1945), they banded with fellow doctors to give medical assistance to war victims.
