Yee Sookyung[edit]

Yee Sookyung (born 1963, Seoul, Korea) is a Korean visual artist. Yee Sookyung is best known for her Translated Vase series, reconstructed sculptures of discarded fragments. In her pieces, she combines art historical, spiritual, and cultural into unique objects that reflect her heritage.

Early Life[edit]

Born in 1963, the first significant generation of women artists and curators began to emerge in Korea. As for china, western modernity did not yet make an impact in Korea until after World War 1. As a result, modern art was on an evolution of classical painting or elaboration of folk art. By the 1950's the cultural scene in the south began to be challenged by international forms of abstract art which was regarded by many as imperialism in disguise. Eventually, domestic art world began to part. Between these hard, conflicting times, there was no space for individual exploration. Yee Sookyungs work is a direct response to the difficulty.

In 1989, Yee Sookyung graduated with an Master of Fine Arts in painting from the Seoul National University. Her figure at this time was Choi Jeong Hwa, an installation artist, designer, and producer who incorporated pop culture into his work.

Technique[edit]

Yeesookyung's work is created with discarded shards of porcelain. She assembles them to new forms and fuses them with 24-carat gold leaf to make the cracks more prominent. As the artist explains, "to me, a piece of broken ceramic finds another piece, and they come to rely on one another." This method allows her to preserve the collective identity of Korean history and culture in each crack of every porcelain fragment, making a final piece for her audience. In doing so, she emphasizes the flaws of the vase.

All of Sookyung’s bodies of works have the attribute of paintings. The origin of her creation starts from her hand gesture and even the golden cracks contain an aspect of drawing.

Awards and Honour[edit]

In 1987, the artist received a BFA in painting from Seoul National University, and in 1989 was awarded an MFA. Years later, in 2012, she received an award for the Korea Artist Prize from the National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea.
