Georgean Z. Kyle, born Georgean Elsie Zoch on May 30, 1950 in Houston, TX is an American naturalist, author, woodworker and illustrator. One of the co-directors of the Driftwood Wildlife Association from 1985 through 2014, she researched behavior, breeding success and diet of avian insectivores with particular emphasis on Chimney Swifts (Chaetura pelagica).
She first achieved national acclaim in 1985 when she and husband Paul D. Kyle published ground-breaking papers on hand-rearing Carolina Wrens and Chimney Swifts through the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association. Twenty years of subsequent research and additional publications resulted in her two books about Chimney Swifts (illustrated by Georgean and co-authored by her husband Paul) which were published by the Texas A&M University Press in 2005.
In 1997, she and her husband founded the Chimney Swift Nest Site Research Project in an effort to stem the decline of Chimney Swift populations across their breeding grounds in North America. Together, Georgean and Paul designed and tested hundreds of artificial nesting structures for Chimney Swifts. As a result of their efforts the couple received the Partners in Flight award for Public Awareness in 2000.
Georgean currently lives with her husband Paul on Travis Audubon’s Chaetura Canyon Sanctuary in Travis County, Texas as stewards. This small sanctuary is the couple’s homestead, the only Chimney Swift observatory in the world and was donated by the Kyles to Travis Audubon for perpetual protection in 2006.
