A self-balancing scooter is a class of self-balancing personal transporter with two parallel wheels. Examples include the Segway PT, the self-balancing hoverboard the Segway MiniPRO and iBOT (a self-balancing wheelchair that can climb stairs).

Segway started development of the iBOT in 1990 with the first working prototypes available in 1992. Their first patent for a self-balancing device was filed in 1994 and granted in 1997[1] and the product was revealed to the public in June 1999.[2][3]
The Segway PT was launched in New York City in December 2001[4] with product delivery to customers from 2002.
Shane Chen then went on to file a patent for a self-balancing hoverboard in February 2013,[5] and launched a Kickstarter fund-raising campaign in May 2013[6] with multiple companies, mainly in China releasing similar products. 500,000 units from 10 suppliers were recalled from the US market alone in July 2016.[7][8]
The Segway miniPRO was launched in January 2016[9] which can also operate independently robot.[10]
