While there is still no consensus regarding whether paid editors are allowed/disallowed to edit Wikipedia, it is clear that the Wikipedia community has labeled such editors as having a conflict-of-interest, and anywhere that paid editors are found, they are discouraged from editing articles, but can do so as long as policy and guidelines are followed. However, some paid editors work under the radar and often do not disclose that they are paid to enforce a point of view to keep whatever entity that hired them in a "good light", especially if the entity has had bad verifiable publicity. Such editors are considered disruptive to the project, because they don't wish to work with the community or follow any policy.

To encourage participation in working with the community, the Paid Editor Disclosure policy is here to help.

What is a paid editor?

[edit]

A paid editor is a single individual that may be part of a bigger entity like a public relations firm that is that is given consideration, usually money in exchange for editing text in wikipedia according to the wishes of the paying client. The account that they use may be a single purpose account used by one person (not shared) used to edit one or more articles related to the subject they have been paid to edit.

What is not a paid editor?

[edit]

An employee (not under a contract) working for a company, and editing their company's article on behalf of their boss or themselves. It is to be noted that editing for the Company you work for is highly discouraged because it is difficult to not project bias.
