PHILIP ANTHONY NORRIE[edit]

Philip Anthony Norrie (born 5/2/1953) is a Sydney based family physician and Conjoint Senior Lecturer, Medical Faculty University of New South Wales. He is also a wine and medical historian and inventor of Resveratrol (anti-oxidant) Enhanced Wine. In his M.D. thesis Dr. Norrie proposed that diseases such as Bubonic Plague, Tularemia and Smallpox contributed to the end of the Hittite Empire and the end of the Bronze Age in the Near East c.1200 BCE. He is also an advocate for Oenotherapy (wine therapy) and the use of Resveratrol as an adjunct therapy to normal cancer therapy.

Early Life[edit]

Philip Norrie was born on 5/2/1953 in Sydney, Australia to Ernest Walter Mervyn Norrie (an Organic Chemist who, along with Professor Lemberg, was the first to isolate an enzyme [CATALASE] in the late 1930's) and Agnes Norrie. Educated at Knox Grammar School where he gained the History and Geography Prize each year and the Sports and Studies Prize for the best All Rounder in his final year in 1970.

In 1974 married Belinda Jill Vivian (daughter of well known Australian cartoonist Ron Vivian (wikipedia citation). Sons Andrew Charles Norrie (18/2/1982), barrister in Sydney and Alexander Edward Norrie (22/5/1987), lawyer in Sydney.

In 1986, with Belinda, he established the trophy winning boutique vineyard Pendarves Estate in lower Hunter Valley to the north of Sydney. The vineyard was sold after 22 years to concentrate on the development of Resveratrol Enhanced Wine.

In his Doctor of Medicine thesis about the role of disease in the demise of the Hittite Empire and the end of the Bronze Age, Dr. Norrie argues that diseases such as Bubonic Plague, Tularemia and Smallpox may have contributed to the end of the Hittite Empire and the Bronze Age in the Near East as well as causing the mass migrations seen between 1200 and 1150 BCE; besides the usual theories of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, changes in warfare, draught, famine, general systems collapse, internal fighting within royal families and invasion by raiders such as the “Sea Peoples”.

Dr. Norrie’s medical philosophy is one of Preventative Medicine with the concept that the best way to treat a disease is to not get it in the first place; hence oenotherapy or the use of wine as a preventative medicine as shown in Dr. Norrie’s PhD which showed wine to be man’s oldest medicine ( having been used as such for over 5,000 years) and best preventative medicine (Copenhagen Study showed wine reduced death from all causes rate by up to 50% and the Zutphen Study showed regular wine drinkers lived on average 5 years longer than teetolaters).

The best way to optimise the health benefits of wine is to increase the anti-oxidants in wine hence Dr. Norrie developed the World’s most potent Resveratrol Enhanced Wine. Resveratrol is an anti-oxidant that occurs naturally in the grape skin to protect it from fungal infection. It is also the only substance to stimulate the production of SIRT-1 which is a Sirtuin that makes cells in all species live longer. Normal white wine has a resveratrol content of 1-2 mg./l and a normal red wine has a resveratrol content of 3-6 mg./l but Dr. Norrie’s Resveratrol Enhanced Wine has a resveratrol content of up to 100mg./l under the Wine Doctor brand currently available in Australia, China and Taiwan. He is an advocate of the use of resveratrol as an adjunct to normal chemotherapy as part of a comprehensive cancer care programme.

Dr Norrie is an advocate for Oenotherapy or the use of wine in moderation, as a preventative medicine and part of a normal healthy lifestyle.
