Village BA (Chinese: 村BA; pinyin: Cūn BA) is an amateur nationwide basketball tournament in China. It attracted nationwide popularity as a down-to-earth basketball competition. Corruption and match-fixing in the CBA league also pushed fans to look elsewhere.[1]

Format

[edit]

The competition starts every June to July with a local teams playing against each other, combined with folk festivals surrounding the harvest season.

The second phase of the competition is held regionally from August to September. Each province nominates two teams to represent it in the respective of four divisions set up in the southeast, northeast, northwest and southwest of the country. For each of the regions a single round-robin and an elimination round is played. The first and second places of the the southeast, northeast and northwest regions, as well as the first place in the southwest region, will advance to the third stage of the finals.

The finals are played in Taipan township, a rural Miao village of Taijiang County, Guizhou, with the hosting village's team and the seven teams that have advanced. The 8 teams will be drawn by lot, followed by a knockout round, and the losing team will also play a qualifying round.

History

[edit]

Taipan village held basketball tournaments since the 1930s, but the tournament did not gather attention until videos of it went viral, and local government officials started promoting it.[2] The tournaments were originally associated with the local Chixin harvest festival, held annually on the 6th day of the 6th lunar month.[3][4]

The tournament is viewed as part of China's Rural Revitalization strategy[5] and is nowadays organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the General Administration of Sports.[6]

In 2022 a new basketball stadium was opened to hold the tournament. The matches have attracted as many as 18,000 visitors to the village[7] and have been livestreamed on national media, attracting millions of viewers.[8]

In 2023, NBA star Jimmy Butler attended the tournament.[8] In 2024 Liu Yudong attended the opening of the 2024 finals.[9]
