Pierre William Johnson is a French and American sociologist, economist and writer. His work deals mainly on social and environmental aspects of sustainable development.
Biography[edit]
Youth[edit]
Born in the United States to an American father (Ira D. Johnson) and a French mother (Christiane Ducros), the family of Pierre Johnson left the United States when he was 2 years old to settle in Paris where he will be studying. He is the eldest of three brothers. His parents regularly organize trips to the United States, during exchanges with universities on the East coast or summer holidays. In 1974, the mother and her 3 sons take the France in Le Havre to sail to New York, while Ira flies there. After the death of Ira D. Johnson in April 1976, Christiane raises the three children alone. A few years later (1978–79) she organizes an exchange year in Stores, Connecticut. During the summer, the Johnson cross the United States from East to West with a friend family, the Buneaux, including the parents and two young sons.
Studies[edit]
Back in the France, Pierre Johnson joins the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. Concerned with social and philosophical issues, he decides after his BA (1983) to study social sciences, leading a parallel preparatory curriculum at Lakanal (Sceaux) and studying philosophy (Master on the idea of the nation in the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau with Etienne Balibar), then sociology and planning applied to developing countries (1994). He teaches English in parallel to meet his needs. Wishing to apply knowledge to development issues he does a 5 month internship in the Asia department of United Cities Development (decentralized cooperation).
First field works[edit]
At the end of 1994, P. Johnson volunteers in Thailand for a large national NGO, Population and Community Development Association. Based in Maha Sarakham, in the region of Isan, he helps the local team in reporting to donors on rural development projects (community water development, reforestation ...).
Back in France for Christmas 1995, he accepts a short-term contract with the Asian department of United Cities Development, then decides to go in Latin America. Volunteer for CEDAL, a center of study and documentation on Latin America, he wants to know this continent. he follows first a training in project management in Brussels to receive a grant from the National Centre for Development Cooperation (CNCD) supporting volunteers working for civil society in developing countries. In May 1996 he departs for Mexico and Central America to identify contacts for CEDAL and organizations which may need his services. After meeting with various initiatives in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, a contract is established with the coordination of coffee producer organizations of the state of Oaxaca (Mexico), for a program of support to local development and evaluation of member organizations of the coordination of two years. During this period, P. Johnson organizes participatory workshops with producer organizations, and initiates his experience of the dynamics of producer organizations. He remains in Oaxaca for another year. In 1999, he identifies for Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation innovative initiatives likely to contribute to the Alliance for a Responsible, Plural and United World, an informal network supported by the foundation. During his stay in Mexico, he is also contact for the review of the Belgian cooperation Demain le monde, columnist and correspondent for Caravan, magazine of the Alliance for a Responsible, Plural and United World.
Facilitator of communities of practices on social innovations and first publications[edit]
Back in France late 1999, he works two years for Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation at the position of editor of the Web site of the Alliance for a Responsible, Plural and United World, in three languages (English, French, Spanish). On this occasion, he meets many leaders of social innovation, social and solidarity economy (Marcos Arruda, Chilo Villareal ...), industrial ecology (Suren Erkman), finance ethics (Paul Dembinski), etc. At the suggestion of Laurent Fraisse, he organizes the first meeting of the fair trade workshop, on his return from Mexico, then also assumes the coordination of this group within the Solidarity Socio-Economy Workgroup for 6 years (2000-2006). The coordinator of this workgroup is then Philippe Amouroux (deceased March 2006). P. Johnson wrote the Proposal Paper "Fair Trade in the 21st century" with contributions from members of the fair trade workshop. These responsibilities led him to participate in the 2001 and 2005 editions of the World Social Forum, with the delegation of the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation coordinated by Gustavo Marin and Philippe Amouroux, as well as to other meetings organized by the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation, on governance and land management, for example.
In 2002, while the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation staff begins a sabbatical, P. Johnson is Rapporteur of the Working Group on Ethical Trade and Fair Trade of the French Committee for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. He prepared in parallel with the association Yamana a type II project for the study of Mexican fair trade label, the first label of its kind in a producer country. In 2003, he goes to Mexico several months for the study of Mexican fair trade label for Yamana, with funding from the Interministerial Delegation for Innovation and Social Economy.
