Lily Zhang is an American table tennis player and competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.[4]

Early Life

Lily Zhang was born in Redwood City, California on June 16, 1996.[2] Her father played for his county’s table tennis team in the Xi'an Province, and Lily started playing table tennis with her parents when she was 6. By the age of 13, she was the #2 ranked Junior Woman table tennis player in the United States. Lily began her training at a youth center in Milpitas, California, where she would practice 3 hours a day and 18 hours a week.[5] She currently lives in Palo Alto, California where she attends Palo Alto High School.[6]

In Lily's short career she has competed in a number of international events and played against numerous international competitors.

Pan American Games

Lily participated in the 2011 Pan American Games where she played both as an individual and also as part of the United States team. Lily and the two other Americans on the team, Ariel Hsing and Erica Wu, took home a team bronze medal. Lily also won the individuals bronze medal at the event.[7]

Qatar Peace and Sport Cup

On November 22, 2011, Lily Zhang and Anna Tikhomirova won the Woman's Doubles title at the Qatar Peace and Sport Cup.[3]

2012 London Olympics

After qualifying for the last single's position on by beating Canada's Anqi Luo in five games in the North American Olympic Trials, Lily Zhang would head into London as the 49th[8] seed behind her teammate Ariel Hsing. Given her ranking, Zhang would be facing up against Croatia's Cornelia Molnar where she would proceed to lose in straight games (11-6,11-8,11-7,11-5)[9]

The team competition saw the United States play second-seeded Japan in the first round of proceedings [10] . Zhang would proceed to lose to Sayaka Hirano of Japan in straight games (11-9,11-5,11-3) and would team with Erica Wu in the doubles to lose to Kasumi Ishikawa and Ai Fukuhara, also in straight games (11-7,11-7,11-1)[11]
