A Cordial Introduction to the Morris Burner Hostel Hello, and welcome to the adventure that is the Morris Burner Hotel. In the essence of artistic expression, hundreds of Burners have taken an iconic 1928 four-story brick hotel in the heart of Reno and created a very, very magical place. It is much like the playa in that it changes and inspires you.

When we first walked through the door in Summer 2013, the stench was unbearable, and the dirt so deep that it seemed almost inconceivable that it could ever be clean—but now, as you walk the halls, it is like a beautiful boutique hotel, overflowing with art, music, and crazy, fun-loving Burners.

It is also much more than just a hostel. It is a gathering place where you can not only meet like-minded, artistic, hard-driven Burners, but also hatch and execute art plans.

You can instantly find out what is happening in Reno, sit around a burn barrel and enjoy our (your) gigantic outdoor permanent playa called the Moasis, join in on any variety of meetings, watch a movie, help prepare a family meal, or just relax. It can be calming or it can be wild; mostly, though, it is friends in a friendly place.

"Jungle Jim" Gibson[edit]

"Jungle Jim" Gibson is the Owner, Executive Director, and inspiration behind the Morris Burner Hotel project. His career in the microelectronics industry has spanned 40 years during which time he has co-founded three companies, held the positions of Vice President of Engineering, Sales and Marketing, General Manager, Sr. Principal Engineer, and President/CEO. He holds three US patents, and in 2007 was Entrepreneur of the Year in Northern Nevada.

In 2008 he retired as "operating" CEO of his successful Nevada based company and went to Burning Man for the first time. To say it was life changing would be an understatement. He returned home that first year and started construction of the now legendary "Jungle Bus" and has immersed himself in the Burner community ever since. In 2011 he was part of the Temple of Transition project, which was again life changing.

Mission[edit]

We are a Member Based entity fostering the burner ethos of Art, Music, Culture, and the ten principles of Burning Man.

The Morris Burner Hostel is a Burning Man inspired housing facility and community space dedicated to building community, fostering the arts, and helping to educate people in the Burning Man ethos. It is a place to share, create, participate, and build relationships. Above all, it is a place where we come together to manifest wonderment and make the future a better place. See a Virtual Tour of the Morris! Watch the Virtual Tour! We are so blessed at the Morris, to have amazing and wonderful friends. A very good friend, who is the photographer who has taken many of our photo’s we use in media and print, is Vincent Cascio. He has been with the Morris almost since the beginning. His photos are gorgeous, you should check out his stuff on his website Black Hawk Virtual Media.

Staff[edit]

Our Administrative staff are here to help guide the Morris along its journey.

Residents[edit]

We have the capacity to accommodate between 15-18 full-time residents at the Morris Burner Hostel at any given time. Becoming a resident is a process. Residents are required to contribute to the mission of the project and play an active role in helping sustain the entity, while furthering their own artistic endeavors and learning new skills, or sharpening skills they already had in order to make the world, and our "home away from home" a better place. They assist in the day-to-day running of the hostel with the rest of our members as dedicated volunteers. From Security to Housekeeping, Lobby and Event Booking, residents are SUPER VOLUNTEERS that help make it all work!

On the Morris Burner Volunteer Freeway, we see many people come, help and move on to other adventures. We are forever grateful to anyone who has ever stepped foot into the Morris, because they have all added their likeness and contribution to make the Morris what it is. This is a constantly evolving process! The Morris is a living, breathing community that is ever evolving and growing.

Membership[edit]

2018 will mark FIVE YEARS OF EXISTENCE for the Morris Burner Hostel! We took a tired old hotel in downtown Reno and built it into a community art space, currently-closed-but-hopefully-soon-to-be-resurrected-entertainment venue, burner and art hostel, and place where Burners can congregate, talk, and enjoy each others company whenever they wish. The response from the Burner community, the international arts and travel community, and essentially everyone who has been touched by this space has been nothing short of amazing. Today, we are a new shining star right in the heart of Reno, showing the whole world just what Burners are made of; do a quick internet search for the Morris Burner Hostel, and you will see the stir we are creating. Just like the playa, this is a participatory environment, and virtually every visitor gets involved in some way. It is, in essence, very much like a large-scale art project that you would see on the playa, except we all get to enjoy it for years to come.

We have been granted legal status by the City of Reno to be a private club rather than a public hotel. This gives us the freedom to do many unique, creative, and fun things that would be unavailable to us as a public facility. As a condition of this legal status, we must have a unique set of criteria that defines who can partake in membership, and we must both abide by those standards and keep track of our members. This project is the result of hundreds of Burners donating their time, energy, and materials; as such, it is for the Burner community to enjoy.

We have high hopes for our membership system and anticipate it will keep not only those who are participating at the Morris, but burners in general, connected. Our ideas are perpetually in the planning, development and evolutionary process! When signing up for membership, we will ask if and how you may be interested in participating. We hope you'll consider it, because we want as many people involved as possible!

Membership Tiers and Benefits[edit]

$10 One time, intro to Burning Man You might not be sure what all this hippy stuff is about, but you searched hostels in the area and were intrigued. You read some good reviews and want to check it out and see what it's about. This is a ONE TIME, ONE STAY membership for the duration of your stay. If you come back to visit us again, you would not be elligible for this.

The initial $20... We ask that you make an initial one-time investment in the Morris in the amount of $20. Since we are a membership based hostel, everyone is required to be a member to stay with us. What happens to this $20 depends on YOU. It can EITHER:

~be the gateway towards on-going support of the Morris in a yearly capacity. Use your Paypal account to sign up for on-going $5/monthly payments. This makes your ANNUAL membership $75. ~acts as a single, one-month, temporary membership that gives you all the access all our members get, but for only one month.(You also don't get a t-shirt, sorry =) ~after the one-month, if you want to see if we are really as cool as we say we are (we are, trust me), you can pay an ADDITIONAL $30 and be done for the year, as this would mean you would have made the annual membership payment of $50. This offer is good for up to one year after you paid the initial $20 10 Principles Special: If you are a new member and can recite the 10 principals, we give you a 50% credit (that's 50% off your membership!) towards the membership of your choice.

HAVE YOU BEEN A TEMPORARY MEMBER? We take $20 off membership....so a year would be $30 instead of $50 (must be redeemed within a calendar year of initial, temporary membership).

Yearly Membership Renewal: $50 ($75/year if paying monthly) After the initial $20, you choose to either pay $5/month or you can pay the entire $50 at one time ($30 if you got a 10-Principle Discount or already paid the first month!)

Annual membership at the Morris gets you some awesome basic benefits. For your $50/year ($60/year if paying monthly), you get:

An awesome Morris Burner Hostel Badge, that identifies who you are and basically when you came in to the system! How low is your number? Swag-a-rific for sure, and a great way to track your involvement in the project! Your very own Morris Burner Hostel purple-ishus t-shirt! We have many events that are lower cost or free admission for members. Keep an eye on our calendar here on the website, or our Facebook page for things other folks won't get to be a part of! Workshops, parties, all good things and all for our members! All the discounts at our affiliate local business around Reno. To see a complete list, check out our Burner Resources page to see all the places you get perks just for being a member! Access to the Steampunk Saloon, back yard and to hang out with us any time during regular business hours (when the general public is not). Come spend some time with us! Art! Volunteer! If you’d rather not have to worry about remembering to pay each month or remembering to deduct from your Paypal, pay all at once and save an additional $10! Members upgrading from a one-month can pay an additional $30 and have a whole year of membership goodness! This is an annual fee that goes to continued support of the Morris.

PATRONS pay $150 annually. In addition to all the perks mentioned above, additional swag includes:

1 complementary off-peak night in a non-suite room.

SUPPORTERS pay $250 annually. In addition to all the perks mentioned above, additional swag includes:

Member, Resident and Volunteer Guidelines and Expectations[edit]

To be signed by ALL Members

In order to create and sustain a pleasant and enjoyable living and playing environment, the MBH community has created this set of guidelines. All members can be an example to others by showing our larger community that living by the 10 Burning Man Principles on a day-to-day basis is possible and allows us to thrive.

The following are our guidelines and expectations of all members, residents, and guests at the Morris.

Noise levels will be decreased after 10:00 pm during the week when there is no holiday or event happening. This pertains to both the building and the yard. We respect residents peace and quiet. We are happy to recommend any number of 24 hour places in Reno where one can hang out in the late night hours. This is a Leave No Trace space. Leaving MOOP, cigarette butts, cans, bottles, trash, etc., including dishes left in the sink, is also not considerate and not the mark of a good guest or housemate. Nudity is not allowed in any public areas, inside or outside. Excessive intoxication is not acceptable. It is okay to indulge, but not to be out of control drunk or problematic in any way. This includes being excessively loud, arguing, or just being an ass. Smoking anything or having an open flame (ie candles or unattended incense) in the building is not allowed. This is an old building and we all need to be mindful of the safety of our environment. Illegal substances are still illegal at the Morris, use of which jeopardizes what we have built here for the entire community. If you feel the need to engage in these activities, please do it away from our property. This is especially true for residents – you set the example for visitors and guests to follow, please set a good one. You are responsible for any of your guests while at the MBH and you will be held accountable for their actions. If they break the rules, please educate and enlighten them about our guidelines and community standards. Members who are not staying at MBH will be asked to leave at 10pm on weeknights and midnight on weekends, unless they are intending on spending the night with a resident or if they are the guest of a specific resident who will be responsible for the guest until they are escorted out. No sleeping is allowed in public spaces. Guests of third floor residents must be escorted at all times. Staff or third floor hostel guests are permitted. We are a gifting community and givers by nature. This in no way means we are to be solicited by other residents or guests i.e. regularly asking for cigarettes, alcohol, food, money, rides and such. Radical self reliance is one of the principles. Please try to see to your own needs. Please be mindful that while community space is everywhere, use only food supplies and groceries that belong to you or that are put on the community/sharing tables. *Our kitchen guidelines and expectations are included in a separate document. There is no fire spinning on the property without Controlled Burn sanctioning the event. Lighting of the burn barrel will be approved by Hostel management as there are many conditions, including air quality, neighbors rights, etc that must be considered first. Fire in our burn barrels must be kept to safe levels. There should be no raging or dangerous levels of fire in our burn barrels, especially on windy days. Please do not start a fire and leave it unattended. If you start it, it is your responsibility to maintain it. We expect that our members and residents will communicate openly and honestly with each other to resolve issues and situations. When that does not occur, we will evaluate each situation on a case-by-case basis, keeping the concept of “radical inclusion” in mind, while at the same time cooperating to produce a fun, safe, and drama free environment at the Morris. *Our communication guidelines and expectations are included in a separate document. Verbal abuse will not be tolerated. Please be mindful of bad language, especially when young guests are visiting the Hostel. Use common sense. Anyone violating the below rules (zero tolerance) at the MBH will be asked to vacate the premises immediately and their actions may result in police involvement. Rules that fall into this category are as follows:

Stealing. Excessive physical violence when the resident or member is the aggressor. Dealing or distributing drugs or anything else illegal. Any instance of sexual harassment, such as unwanted pinching, spanking, kissing, verbal sexual advances, and similar, non-physical but clearly unwanted behavior, is completely unacceptable. It is imperative that each person living or staying at the Morris feels safe in their environment. Underage drinking and/or providing minors with alcohol. I, on behalf of myself, my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, hereby irrevocably & unconditionally release & hold harmless from liability The Morris Burner Hotel LLC and it’s Releasees from any & all liabilities, injuries, losses, claims, actions, damages, costs, or expenses of any nature whatsoever whether in law or equity, known or unknown, occurring during, caused by, relating to, or arising in any way from my participation at The Morris Burner Hostel.

With these, and all related activities, there is a certain element of risk. By accepting this waiver, I hereby acknowledge that my participation is at my own risk, certifying that I am physically able to participate in any performance or activity that I am engaged in on premises, and have not been advised otherwise by a qualified medical professional, and that I assume all responsibilities for any and all aspects of participation by both myself and any children who might accompany me. This waiver applies to any and all activities participated in at The Morris Burner Hotel LLC.

I understand that this Release of Liability irrevocably & unconditionally releases and holds harmless all releasees from any financial or other liability for any injury, bodily harm, sickness, illness, or loss of life that I as a Guest or my family member or friend may suffer and from any economic harm or loss of property occurring during, caused by, relating to, or arising in any way out of volunteering at The Morris Burner Hostel. Elements allude to quantum entanglement, black holes, and other mysteries. The room uses a simple color scheme of black and white with touches of red. A full room spiral pattern of black and white is only fully visible seen from the perspective of the doorway; and once inside, the spiral no longer holds together. This is much like the event horizon of a black hole, where everything that is “normal” in the laws of nature breakdown; matter, light, energy descend into the ultimate rabbit hole of absurdity. Interesting elements are hidden here and there, inviting guests to explore and engage.

By booking direct with the Morris, the rates for this room are $30 Sun-Thurs, $35 Fri-Sat. These rates are PER BED.

  • This is a shared room with a bunk bed.* Reserve this room as a “2 Bed Room” in our reservation system and mention in the notes if you would like this particular room. Each bed is rented individually and male/female CAN be paired together. Because these are single beds, guests who rent these rooms cannot have guests stay in the same bed. Room 212 | The Reno Music Room Designed By: Aaron Alvarez and Stefani Leota Amenities Beds King Bed Privacy Community Bathroom Private Room We want to make sure that musicians are not under-represented in our art project. Though installation media such as art rooms are traditionally a visual process, the Reno Music Room has played a central role in creative inclusiveness. “Cut and paste” flyers of local shows from the past twenty years cover the walls, and instruments are laid about the room, waiting to serve as your expressive voice.

Room 214 – R-L | Renoverse Designed By: Dave Cherry Amenities Beds Twin Beds (2) Privacy Community Bathroom Shared Room Renoverse is a mural-intensive wonderland created by Dave Cherry. On the West wall is a fun and quirky “classic Reno” portrait of down town Reno, with some fun humor thrown in. Then we have our big, wide world, on the East wall is a gorgeous rain forest scene, and on the South wall is the Morris fish tank, because those are the only fish we could manage to keep alive. R.I.P Larry, you were an awesome fish!

Dave Cherry is a talented local artist, musician and all-around good guy. He’s one of those guys who’s art work can be found through out the Morris. That giant mural of the Temple in the lobby? Yeah, that is Dave’s too. It took him almost a full year to paint the murals in Renoverse, and we love him for it, thanks Dave! He also plays a mean saxophone and has a few groups around town.

Kiddo G. Odd “Art” is currently the Morris’ resident artist and is making cool art stuff happen at the Morris! Facilitating classes, created a dedicated artists space in the basement, and switching things up to help out where she can, she is dynamic and ever-evolving. Fueled by rage and sleep deprivation, a tiny human wanders confused, lost in the depths of Infinity Land with paint stained clothes and sore hands.

Resources[edit]

Hi Burners! We are SO lucky! So very many of you have to travel from all over the world to come “home” to Black Rock City, and we live, almost literally, in the back yard of Burning Man! What that means is that many of you come here, to our default world home, to prepare for your sojourns to the Playa. Being the neighborly folks we are, we thought it would be awesome to help all ya’all out by providing a page with some of the resources that might be helpful to you and to introduce you to local businesses that cater to Burner’s, but also have to keep going the other 50 weeks of the year. We encourage anyone visiting Reno to visit and patronize these locally owned businesses where possible.

You won’t find links to Wal-Mart on our page, sorry….you can Google that shit, we want to help our friends, family, and neighbors exist and believe strongly in the “Buy Local” vibe that’s been lost in so much of our country.
