Prema Raman new article content ... Prema Raman is an Indian professor of English literature and language. She teaches at Baruipur College where she is Head of the Department of English. She earned her degrees in English and Education from the Calcutta University and did her doctoral studies at the Rabindra Bharati University under Professor Amitava Roy. Prema's area of research is comparative post-modern drama and her doctoral dissertation studies family and relationships in post-modern drama by comparing relationships in the works of avant garde playwrights John Osborne, Edward Albee, Vijay Tendulkar and Shankaran Pillai. Her work brought together writing in Indian vernacular languages such as Malayalam (for the plays of Shankaran Pillai) and Marathi (for the plays of Tendulkar such as Shantata Court Chalu Ahe, Ghasiram Kotwal) as the counterpart to the Western idea of kitchen sink drama and the crisis of family and personal relationships in a post-modern world. In this sense, she is a part of the critical thinking front in Indian writing in English who have used Indian literature seamlessly with Western literature in their scholarly writings. Prema's work on Look Back in Anger earned her critical repute in literary circles in India. She is a member of the Shakespeare Society of Eastern India.
