Early bot history[edit]

  • Pre-bots (and other "editing assistance" tools) everyone actually
    1. hit the "edit" button in a web browser
    2. manually made a change in a browser edit window
    3. hit the "submit" button
  • Can you imagine renaming a category containing 100 articles this way? How about a category containing 1000 articles?

This is precisely how it used to be done!

  • Bots fundamentally do what a human user would, i.e. (after logging in) fetch a page, make a change, and submit the change.
