Early bot history[edit]
- Pre-bots (and other "editing assistance" tools) everyone actually
- hit the "edit" button in a web browser
- manually made a change in a browser edit window
- hit the "submit" button
- Can you imagine renaming a category containing 100 articles this way? How about a category containing 1000 articles?
This is precisely how it used to be done!
- Bots fundamentally do what a human user would, i.e. (after logging in) fetch a page, make a change, and submit the change.
- rambot was the first bot I was aware of. Of course, there's now a page on the history of Wikipedia bots.
