Theory vs. Reality

Theory[edit]

Blue pillar (1: Encyclopedia) Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a soapbox, an advertising platform, a vanity press, an experiment in anarchy or democracy, or an indiscriminate collection of information. It is not a newspaper. That kind of content should be contributed instead to the Wikimedia sister projects.

Green pillar (2: NPOV) Wikipedia has a neutral point of view. We strive for articles that advocate no single point of view. Sometimes this requires representing multiple points of view, presenting each point of view accurately and in context, and not presenting any point of view as "the truth" or "the best view." All articles must strive for verifiable accuracy: unreferenced material may be removed, so please provide references. Editors' personal experiences, interpretations, or opinions do not belong here. That means citing verifiable, authoritative sources, especially on controversial topics and when the subject is a living person. When conflict arises over neutrality, discuss details on the talk page, and follow dispute resolution.

Yellow pillar (3: Free) Wikipedia is free content that anyone can edit. No editor owns any article.

Orange pillar (4: Code of conduct and etiquette) Wikipedians should interact in a respectful and civil manner. Respect and be polite to your fellow Wikipedians, even when you disagree. Apply Wikipedia etiquette, and avoid personal attacks. Find consensus, avoid edit wars, and remember that there are 6,836,631 articles on the English Wikipedia to work on and discuss. Act in good faith, never disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point, and assume good faith on the part of others. Be open and welcoming.

Red pillar (5: Ignore all rules) Wikipedia does not have firm rules besides the five general principles presented here. Be bold in updating articles and do not worry about making mistakes. Your efforts do not need to be perfect.

Gaming the system: "Playing games with policies and guidelines in order to avoid the spirit of communal consensus, or thwart the intent and spirit of policy, is strictly forbidden."

Be Bold: User Namespace[edit]

Being bold in User namespace:
"It is generally recommended that you do not edit another Wikipedian's user page or comments left on talk pages (other than your own, and even then do not be reckless)."

Refactoring Talk Pages[edit]

Refactoring talk pages:
"If another editor objects to refactoring then the changes should be reverted."

Talk Page Guidelines: Others' Comments[edit]

Talk page guidelines: Others' comments:
"Editing – or even removing – others' comments is sometimes allowed. But you should exercise caution in doing so, and normally stop if there is any objection."

Biographies of Living People[edit]

Wikipedia Biographies of living persons: Privacy of names:
"When deciding whether to include ______, its publication in secondary sources other than news media, such as scholarly journals or the work of recognized experts, should be afforded greater weight than the brief appearance ________ in news stories."

Attack page policy:
"An attack page is a Wikipedia article [...] that was created primarily to disparage its subject."

Coatrack:

"A coatrack article is a Wikipedia article that ostensibly discusses the nominal subject, but in reality is a cover for a tangentially related biased subject."

Masking the lack of notability: Building a biography:
"A living person's single event notability can be disguised by also including the subject's life history, such as graduating high school valedictorian or being interviewed by a local newspaper. The editor includes these events, usually accompanied with valid sources, attempting to establish a reputation for the person. Merging multiple unrelated non-notable accomplishments takes focus away from the true purpose of creating the coatrack article."

What Wikipedia is not: Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information:

WP:NOTNEWS:

  1. News reports. Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion. For example, routine news reporting on things like announcements, sports, or celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia. While including information on recent developments is sometimes appropriate, breaking news should not be emphasized or otherwise treated differently from other information. Timely news subjects not suitable for Wikipedia may be suitable for our sister project Wikinews. See also: Wikipedia:Notability (events)
