J-Subculture (ジェイ・サブカルチャー) is a Japanese e-commerce site for shopping from Japan that offers regular online shopping, purchase agency (proxy) services for Japanese retail products as well as commission-free auction [1] via Yahoo! Auctions Japan, Japan’s largest auction platform. It also operates a wholesale division, specializing in the international distribution of mainly Japanese sweets, stationery and different toy lines. All the services J-Subculture offers are exclusively oriented towards clients from outside Japan.
The company headquarters are based in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. According to its company profile [2] the business started out as a small, local system management company in 2006, but then turned its focus gradually onto the import/export business with distribution of otaku-/pop-culture and Japanese trademark goods in 2012 [3]. Its primary mission it sees in the introduction of Japanese subculture and bringing Japan as awhole closer to people from abroad. With the expansion and growth of business activities a wholesale department was added in 2014 in order to serve international commercial clients.
Logo & Mascots
[edit]As the main shop mascot, J-Subculture has chosen a deformed style of Hatsune Miku, the main character of the singing voice synthesizer of the Vocaloid. Besides the character of Marisa Kirisame, another sub-mascot, the female characters by the names of Ami, Nami and Mami appear alongside Hatsune Miku as shop representatives. The three students, animated characters designed by the company’s in-house artist Honda, come each with characteristics linked to the shop departments.
